Networking 2 computers 300ft apart?

I need to network a cable modem on one computer to another computer 300ft away. I will be burying a tube underground to pull a cable through. The idea is two houses share one cable modem.

My question is are the Linksys routers sold in Best Buy good enough to push a signal this distance? If not what type of hardware would I need?

Thanks for any help,
Jim

If its really 300ft then a standard run of Cat 5 should work as the limit of 10/100 is 100 meters which is about 328ft. Otherwise you are looking at a repeater which are expensive and somewhat rare. Your other option is to go wireless and use directional antennas. The $8 Pringles can antenna should get you plenty of range or commercial antennas go for around $40. You really don't need more than 802.11b as your cable connection isn't going to be nearly that fast. This equipment would probably be cheaper than 300ft of good cat 5 and a wired router.

littlejim68, use wireless to solve this problem.

Two separate houses have two separate and different ground systems. Connecting them with any copper wire without specific protection mechanisms is something I can't see possibly complying with electrical code (even if it is low voltage) and is dangerous enough to be a life safety hazard. Don't do it.

To connect two separate buildings, use fiber or wireless. Wireless is going to be a lot cheaper, and will carry a cable modem's bandwidth just fine.

Oh, and you are almost definitely violating your cable company's terms of service by doing this.

AGREED, don't connect the buildings with copper, just use wireless, it can be done for under $100 at 11Mbps

Thanks for all the input from everyone.

On the suggestion of wireless; I have to go from a 150yr old house to a trailer (metal sided) about 250ft away. With this distance and metal sides of the trailer I thought I couldn't do wireless. Unless you can mount your antennas outside the house? Links and or input on different antennas would be helpful.

It?s a family farm. One address two houses. Its stretching the terms of service a bit I don?t think violating. We get it past the phone company at least :)
