I'm trying to network 2 98 machines w/o luck on tcpip.works on ipx/spx.currently have client for ms networks, ms family logon' dialup adptr; linksys ethernet adptr, tcpip dialup adptr, tcpip ethernet adptr, file & printer sharing installed w/ms family logon chosen.the network adptr is bound to tcpip, tcpip ethernet adptr is set for auto ip addy and bound to ms logon ms networks and file & print sharing(both comps)when I open up networking icon on desktop, each unit see's its own computer but not the other.after opening up that icon I open up the entire network icon and one unit doesn't show the "workgroup" . what can I do to let each comp see the other on tcpip??

Bad thing about 98 what ever you do on the network you MUST REBOOT.... So netbui works so the hardware seems to be working. Step one unbind, remove everything from the nics on both machines.... REBOOT. Then put in tcpip, setup up your address dg subnet etc..etc.. Then reboot again.

It should be working...

Of course, if you just want to network the two machines and not connect to the Internet, NETBEUI is all you need, and there is no configuration required. :)

Hrrm...I think you have to set one computer to be the "master browser" or some such.

Actually, the computers hold a master browser election and decide themselves who is the master browser, no need for you to set it.

Yeah, but they don't always hold an election or update when you need them too. If you open up network neighborhood and don't see a workstation that should be there, the browse-master probably just hasn't updated to show the new workstation. If there's only two workstations on the network, they may well have not finished an election yet.

is file and/or print sharing enabled, and do you have a folder or printer shared?
netbios on win9x generally won't show the computer if the resource is unavailable, also what are you ip settings, should be something like....
ip 192.168.1.xxx (xxx = any number between 2-254 and must be different on each machine)
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
gateway (pointing to your router if you have one or to the ip of a machine running ICS, leave blank if neither applies)
quoting myself from your other thread in tech support.
