The computer can't even see itself except for when I do a search in Network!

The only thing thast shows is the workgroup.

I have a DSL modem and Netgear RT314 router with 2 computers both runningh 2k w/sp2.

The main system has SRP1 installed. I have gone through sharing, network connections, user accounts but the only way ijn Network I can see the computer is doing a serach.
The other computer can't see this one and this one doesn't see the 2nd computer.

I really don't know what's wrong! I have the user names in both computers with the same passwords for both.

The 2nd computer does see itself but that's it.

I haver been to wwon.com but I still can't get the machines to talk to one another.

The internet is accessible from either ok.

Make sure that you enable Netbios over TCP/IP on both machines.

To enable goto:

Network and Dial-up connections\Local Area Connections
right-click Properties
Internet Protocols (TCP/IP)\Properties\Advanced\Wins

and make sure that Enable NetBios over TCP/IP is ticked.

If you are using the Netgear to Assign IP's, tick Use NetBIOS settings from the DHCP server

I never had Netbios before and it worked before I added usernames.
I have since deleted the usernames and still nothing.

Normally you either need to access the other machine via it's IP address or enable NetBios if you want to access it via name. You can also add an entry into the hosts file on each machine defining the other machines name and IP address.

Netbios was disabled under wins in the 1st machine. Don't know hoe, but it was.

When Netbios was first mentioned I thought it was another protocol that had to be added under local area connection properties. It was never before.

I didn't understand it was buried 4 layers deep under wins that I don't use.

go to -->start-->control panel-->Users and password-->Advanced tab and click on Advanced under Users folder untick account is disabled under guest.
