I have a little network that I like to play and practice with and have a little issue. First my setup.
I have my own domain
one system runs DHCP, DNS, AD (win2k server)
system two runs my web/ftp, and file server and I would also like it to be a print server as well (win2k server)
then I have two client machines running XP and 2k
one HP jetdirect print server connected to a hp 960c
the two servers and one client are connected to my four port linksys router
the other client machine and the jet direct is connect to a hub which is then connected to the router
Ok here is how I set it up initially:
I installed a local printer on the server machine and configured it to use a standard tcp/ip port and specified the ip of the jetdirect. I then shared the printer abd configured it to published in AD and set the permissions to allow everyone.
I then setup the pinters on the client machines by adding a "networked" printer which I was able to locate and install the proper software.
Whoo
Ok so the problem is that if I try to print from the clients nothing happens and I just get a print error (I believe it's a print timeout error) on the local machines. I've searched high and low for possible fixes including MS's KB but the only solution I have found is to install the printers locally on each machine (meaning adding a tcp/ip port on each machine). I don't want to have to do it that way because it means I have to have the drivers on hand and must go through the procces of creating the tcp/ip port (not a big deal really) but I just want to do it right.
Ok I know that that was probably too much info but I want to get some really good answers
Ok so you network admins/guru's help out a network admin wanna be
Thanks!
