networked comps sharing 56k dialup connection?

is it possible to network 2 comps by crossover cable and then getting one computer to dialup connection then both comps sharing the 56k connection? so both comps can use the internet?

thanks!

That can work just fine. The only downside to it is that the gateway computer has to be running in order for the client to get on line. If that is not a problem and you have a network card installed in each computer then all you have to do is a little configuring which is well described at www.practicallynetworked .com. It may be suggested somewhere that in order to share an internet connection that a hub, switch or router is necessary but that is not the case. If it is only two computers, a cross-over cable works well.
The one thing I would recommend is to use a good software firewall on each computer. On the gateway computer I would recommend Zone Alarm Pro as it will permit you to operate in full stealth mode. The free ZA is fine for the client.

It's really easy. All you have to do is right-click on the dial-up, select properties, click on advanced, and click on "Share". Then hook the other computer up, and make sure it's set to never dial and automatically select proxy settings and automatically recieve an IP address.
