Network without the Internet Connection

Hi Everyone,

Is it possible to create a network of 10 clients using an 8 port router and 5 port switch without any internet connection? I know a workgroup is possible, however I'd like to include active directory to this network setup.

Any information that you can provide me with would be great.

Thanks,
Dirk

You shouldn't have any problem doing this from what I think.

May I ask why you need an AD server for this setup?

Thanks TC for the quick reply. The reason for AD because that is what I'm use to creating in the past. This will allow for more security for my users as well. My client doesn't have an internet connection from one of their buildings where I'm setting this up at.

I was hoping to create a domain called traning.local and add the 10 client machines.

Any suggestions would be great.

Thanks,

from your brief description, it's possible. since you don't have an internet connection for the place, you won't have to worry about updating the server box either, yay!

With no Internet connection, no only do you have to worrying about updating the server box, what about the workstation updates and then the anti-virus def updates. I am sure someone bond to bring in a disk that might contain some new virus and the old def file will definitely not pick it up.

That is true. But if you cut out an Internet connection, you cut out a huge part of how viruses get into a network, via email attachments. Now, of course there are other ways a virus/trojan can be spread, such as through an infected laptop of the workers (which should be highly disallowed in this case since there is not an easy way to get OS patches and virus def updates) or even a disk. Most virus defs can be downloaded and applied manually if someone wants to do that task every other day/week.

the best policy in this case is to not allow outside computers/disks/programs/thumbdrives in the building, at risk of termination.

Thanks for the quick reply. Actually no one will be able to install anything on the machines as they will be locked down. I will go ahead with my original plan of setting up a network with the standard router w/a 4 port switch along with an 8 port switch. That way if the school decides to install an internet connection all they would have to do is plug the internet modem into the router.

Thanks,
C.R.
