Here's the situation. The neighbor next door is really cool. She doesn't mind if I connect to her wireless router so that I can use her internet connection. However, I can only get reception of her router (Linksys) in one corner of my house. I have built a cheap waveguide antenna for my USB wireless dongle and can get a nice reliable 2 Mbit connection. Hey, it's better than dial-up.
I figure that I'll feed the connection into my own Wireless router (SMC) and rebroadcast it, using a different channel of course. I have my wife's laptop, a file/print server, and my desktop. I want them to see each other on my own internal network, and use the Linksys connection for the internet. The laptop has a wireless card that can connect to my router from anywhere in the house or the backyard, and both the fileserver and desktop are in the same room as the SMC and will be hooked via ethernet.
The problem (i think) is that both my SMC router and her Linksys have the same gateway ID. Whenever I hook both the wireless dongle and the ethernet connection to the router, the internet breaks.
I do have a very old K6-500 that I could use as a proxy server. Perhaps I could use AnalogX proxy, or Proxy+ for the sharing from the computer with the wireless connection to the Linksys, and connect that computer to the uplink port of the SMC router.
If possible, I'd like to do this with my existing equipment. I would also like to be able to remotely administer the computer running the wireless connection, and just leave it in the closet. I have my wireless dongle, a SMC2404WBR, 3 PCI NICs, plenty of Cat5 cables, and one crossover cable. Can it be done?
