Network transfer rate is really slow.

Networking was fine until I built up my existing machine. Here's my set up:

Number 1:
Dell xpst500
128 pc100
20 gig
10/100 netgear NIC

Number 2:
MSI K7T pro 2a
Duron 700@816
128 pc133
10 gig
10/100 netgear NIC

Number 2 is the one I just upgraded.(MB, cpu). I can see both machines just fine and multiplay is fine, just transferring files from #1 to #2 is very slow. Didn't try #2 to #1. Took 15 min to move 7 meg. Wondering if there is a driver I need to install for the card or the MB. Any help is appreciated. I am using a crossover cable as well.

Just an update. When transferring from #1 to #2 very slow. Going from #2 to #1, nice and fast. Also changed my crossover cable and used a hub. No difference.

what slot are the NIC's in? i had the same problem, slow transfer speeds...i had both cards in the first PCI slot, someone here told me the first PCI slot shares an IRQ with the AGP slot so i moved it and it was fixed...reply back and keep me updated...

The cards are in the 4th or 5th pci slot. I'm new to the networking thing so I don't know about the duplex mismatch your talking about. I really don't know about the link speed issue either. Some more info on this issue might be helpful.

OK, here is the latest situation.

Cables are not the problem(changed cables plus used a hub). Went back to crossover.

Computer #1 not the problem(tried pulling from 3rd machine. Same problem)

Network card not the problem(swapped cards with comp #1. Same problem)

Removed drivers and reinstalled card from slot 5 to slot 6. Same problem

So just to recap, data transfer from #2 to #1 comp is just fine but from #1 to #2 is very very slow. This has been going on since the upgrade

System spec:#2 computer
Duron 700@824
MSI K7T pro2a(Via 428 4in1)
128 meg ram
Maxtor 10 Gig
SB live value
Netgear 10/100 FA311 ethernet

I have conducted this test with system at default clock settings. No difference.

When ethernet was designed it was a brodcast multi access protocol thus the need for collision detection and avoidance. When multiple devices share the same broadcast domain, the communication must be simplex or unidirectional. With the advent of switches the broadcast domain is reduced to a point to point connection between the device and the switch and thus the connection can run at full duplex or bidirectional. You can also run at full duplex on a simple point to point using a crossover cable between 2 PCs.

However if one NIC is setup for full duplex and the other in simplex, you will get lots of collisions and very slow connectivity as the protocol for collision avoidance is not prepared for this setup.

Try this and see if any errors show up after a slow transfer.

OK, tried the net test and did not detect any errors. This is getting pretty ridiculous. Does anyone know of a good chat room that discusses topics of this nature? Its very frustrating doing this type of troubleshooting on a forum although I do appreciate the replies. Going to try on more fix and that is to change to a couple of different i/o addresses. If anyone knows of anything else to try just let me know. I'll follow up if this address thing works.

I noticed that the second machine is OC'd. This may set the PCI bus to a higher clock it will stress the NIC. Try the transfers without OC'ing the Duron. Also do you use a switch or a hub? Look at the properties of the NIC cards under Network. Look at the advanced tab. Is it set to autosense or auto negotiation?

I am at work right now, but to answer some of the questions:

I am running win98 on both machines. Not SE
I am running the duron at default settings. Still same issue.
I will check the settings of the network card when I get home in the morning.

Is there anything in the bios settings that could be messing this up. I have made some changes (fast R/W, and just a few others for optimization)? Maybey I should set it back to defaults just to be sure.

Again, thanks for all the input.

You should definitely set the BIOS to default settings. Also, under the PCI/PnP option of the BIOS, enable reset configuration. I see you're using a x-over cable. Did you try straight CAT 5's(not x-over)with the hub? Is it an autosensing hub? If it still doesn't work try another brand NIC.

Well I tried the latest suggestions:

Checked the autosensing thing. Both cards are set to auto, even manually set the problem computer's card to 100T Full duplex. Still no luck. The card is a 10/100 by the way.

I tried changing the I/O address but still, same problem.

I have gone through a hub and thru cables, same problem.

Everything as for as my network is concerned is working great, seeing everybody, seeing all shared files, game play(UT,HL,CS latency 10-30ms), pinging who I want to(less than 10ms), and sharing files. Only problem is that my Duron machine downloads files super slow(7 meg in 15 min). Everything I have tried has not made any difference in the above statement.

I tried the fail safe mode in the bios, same problem.

I am not overclocked any more.

My dell is running the network fine. I can pull files from my duron to the dell super quick. Same type NIC. I have even swapped the cards, same problem.

If this was causing a game problem or I didn't have a cd-rw on my dell(internet connected) I would be very irritated. Now it's more like a mission to find the problem.

All the fixes I have tried are listed above in the posts and what I am running. If anybody has anything else to add feel free. I am here for another 11 hours.

thanks everyone!!!

Balex99 This may or may not be of comfort to you. I have the exact same problem.

Differences:

Machine with slow transfer problem is a P3V4X with P111 667
Nic is a D-link (originally from a DFE-902 gaming kit)
8 port switch - SOHO groups
192MB
20GB 7200 Seagate
Card is set to duplex

Originally I thought it was the cable as a change of cable appeared to resolve the problem. Then it almost immediately reappeared. No amount of changing cables, nics etc now has any effect.

I really hope somebody is able to provide you with help - believe me!!

I have the similar problem. The desktop has a Linksys 100BaseT PCI card, the laptop has a Linksys 10/100 autosensing PCMCIA card, and a Linksys 10/100 autosensing hub, all Linksys stuff, connection speed on both network property page shows 100.00 Mbps. However I can only get ~1.2 Mbyte/sec file transfer speed. (50 sec for a 60 M file). My hypothesis is that the PCMCIA slot can't really handle the 100Mbps bandwidth. The 10/100 card is basically only for the connection to a fast ethernet, but the actual data transfer speed is limited to around 10Mbps.

So I just live with it (unless I can put aside some money for a new laptop).

This may not apply to your situation, just some thoughts.

Edit: I didn't realize your problem is: 15 MINUTES for 7 meg file? Now something must be wrong. I tend to suspect the hardware.

Another thing to check is the networking protocols installed. I remember having a problem with a Win98SE machine where installing VPN with TCP/IP, Netbui, 32-bit DLC and IPX slowed down the machine. Removing the VPN fixed it. Try removing some protocols (if you have that many).

I notice that you're running a Via mobo and you probably have the Via drivers installed. The problem may not be in the network connection but simply a HDD driver related. So, on the PC#2, try to copy a large file from one partition to another to see if it's slow or not.

My network is slower than advertised also. Although not as bad as yours. Try removing all the network protocols except netbui. Or, try swapping the ethernet cards around and see if this does anything.

Just a little academic statistics from Univ. Hawaii's studies:

the average throughput for cdma link under contention is only about 27% (? around this figure)...

Ethernet 802.3 is CDMA/CS...

if high efficiency is desired, go for the deterministic type of protocol, like Token ring by IBM... I'd say too expensive for SOHO...

Right now all I have is TCP/IP and IPX protocols running. Friend of mine has almost identical setup and no problems so definetly could be a bad setting on my part. I've got a LAN party coming up this Wed night so when thats over with I think I will make a fresh start, wipe the HD and do a fresh install. Can't hurt. Machine is for gaming only. I wanna go with 98se anyway.

I remember having problems with the via drivers(4.25 didn't work. Had to use 4.28 betas) and took a while to figure out the problem. That may be where the network issuer lies.

I'll post a new topic after reformatting and let you know how it turned out.

Thanks again for all the suggestions. I dig this forum.

Well, just an update to an old post. Machine is working nicely. Formatted hard drive and installled ME. Not sure if it was ME that fixed the problem. Probably just the fresh install fixed it. Thanks again for all the posts.

One good thing about having just a gaming rig, easy to wipe it out and start over.
