Network Traffic Separation...

I have a windows 2000 box inside my lan that contains a 56k modem. This modem connects sparingly to an agency's network and uses netscape messenger to receive e-mail messages. I've been having an issue with communicating to this remote network because the user also has a lan connection. When this PPP connection is established and the lan connection is active, communication to this agency's network is not functional. However, when i disconnect my lan connection, and solely use the PPP connection, it works fine.

The question is, how can force netscape messenger 4.7 to soley use this PPP connection ?

or any other ideas would be great as well.

THanks,:confused:

The article talks about metrics defining which gateway to use but it doesn't indicate that you can separate traffic to go out on a specific gateway. it indicates that one gateway will be used if multiple are defined depending on the metric defined.

any idea on what i'm missing or how i can split traffic ?

you'll need to add a route on each machine telling them to use that interface (the PPP one).

The command is "route". route /? shows you the syntax.

If you post the actual IP addresses of the computers in question it will be easier to tell you what the route should look like.

That is wherein lies the problem. I'm not talking about multiple machines. I'm talking about a single machine that has a PP connection and LAN connection.

With two interfaces you will have to add a route telling the PCs to use the PPP connection for certain IP addresses.

Also make sure you don't have two default gateways when the PPP connection is up. That will cause all sorts of "weird" behavior.

Ok -- give me an example.

For instance..lets say the remote server's ip is:

210.10.1.1

And the PPP address space is:

210.11.1.2
255.255.255.240
210.11.1.1 - gw

Lan =
192.168.1.137=IP
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.1=gw

and i want all communication to the remote server to use whatever gateway is porivded by the PPP connection

?

route add 210.10.1.1 255.255.255.255 210.11.1.1

The multiple default gateways is what is throwing you off. Can't have that.

You'll also have to make sure the remote system has a route back to you. Also, see if you can't get the same IP everytime for the PPP connection, then you can make the route "persistent" so that it is always in your routing table. the syntax is shown in the help for the command.

Thanks Spidey -

I'm versed well with the command, it's more implementation logic iw as trying to figure out.

Obviously, the lan connection being active willhave its next-hop addy, once i introduct a route for the remote server using the GW of the PPP connection -- the connection to this remote server should work with both the PPP and LAN active because the routing table on the machine will know which route to use based on the static route.

correct ?

If you have two interfaces active you HAVE to use static routes on the host. Of course it's best to just never have more than one interface, but if you're forced into it...
