Network tools to play around with?

Well, i *was* going to test drive a couple different distros this weekend, but I forgot to pick up DVD-Rs last night when I was out with the kids, and being that theyre sick, I dont want to take them out just for that.

So i need something else to do. Some networking tools and things I can play with and learn how to use, even if just basically.

Heres what i have:
1 Laptop running Xubuntu
1 Laptop running Windows Vista
both have wireless adapters as well as ethernet
1 Buffalo WHR-G54S wireless router with DD-WRT

I played around with Samba on xubuntu last night, and can login from vista and get access to whatever use account i set up (still need to learn more about the samba.conf but at least i got a decent start); though while I can see the Vista laptop with xsmbrowser from Xubuntu, I cant see any of the folders I have shared, so thats the next step. Not really sure where to start on it (since i am using the vista public folders and allowed permissions for *everyone* to access them as read only)

Not really sure what else I *can* do however. Any suggestions?

Once I get a few things done between these two, Ill install a linux distro on the vista laptop and see what I can do between the two machines that way.
