Network switch question

In a dorm room, can you just plug a switch in, and have 4 computers running on a single jack? The university requires all the computers to register with the DHCP and I know it records the MAC address of the NICs. Will that be a problem with a switch? I know they let you use minihubs, but I don't know if a switch is different.
