Network sharing problem

HI ,
I have a laptop using xircom network card xe2000. I tried to connect the laptop to the existing network in my home , only file sharing is working ... cant get online. I am using a linksys 4 port router. ANyone come out with an idea what is my problem ? thanks ... the laptop is using Winme

In your network properties, under tcp/ip > properties, for that card, check that "obtain ip automatically" is checked, and the same for DNS. This is also assuming that dhcp is turned on in your router. If all that is ok, then go to control panel and find the internet options and open it. In the connections tab, double click the setup box and run through the connection wizard. Tell it you want to connect through a LAN, uncheck the detect proxy box when you get to it, say no to setting up an email account for the moment. If all is working, when it asks if you want to connect to the internet, it should.

yes i did all the steps i mention........... not working as well... only file sharing is working and from the laptop i cant even open the setup webpage of my router.

or something similiar, it normally means that the router and your wireless(?) card aren't communicating properly. Ensure that you have your passwords, WEP, etc set-up correctly.

What normally happens though, at least in the networks I've worked on. Just leave the computers on, unattended, for about 10-20 minutes, come back and they'll work. Probably negotiating protocals, finding workgroups, internet connections, seeing what all is there and stuff.

yes the pass is setup correctly for sure .... emm..... file sharing is working just fine ..why cant the IE manage to search webpages ? well anyway i will try to leave it there for 15 minutes and see it works .
