Hi, been searching for an answer for this but I can't find what I need. It may not be possible but here it goes:

I have a box that I use as a "server" to store files, pictures and use as a cd server over my network. I currently have 4 computers that connect to this "server". I would like to set up login scripts for each user that would be stored on the server, enabling each user to login to any of the 4 computers and have the same access. Is this possible using a workgroup? I know it can be done on a domain, but since this is a home network I can't use a domain, right? What I kind of want is the ability to give each user a custom login, with a start menu, programs, access to drives and files but I want it to follow them from system to system.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!! :)

Edit: Forgot to mention I am using a linksys router to connect the computers and all are running xp pro.

Just because it is in your house, doenst mean it cant be a domain :)

My guess is you are not using a server OS (nt,2k server, etc).
I assume you have a peer to peer correct?

You will not be able to do what u are seeking if that is the case.

2k server with AD is what you are looking for.

A good start is that u have XP pro and not XP home. At least wioth XP pro you can log into a domian, with XP home, u can not.

So 2k server with active directory. Guess I need to do a little reading up on the configuration of this before I start.

Since I have yet to start this, would I be better off going the Linux route? I have set up a basic linux system with just the everyday apps and such, would the learning curve be about the same?

Thanks for the info!

of all you have done is fiddled lightly with linux then i wouldnt suggest goign down that route. to get samba to work as a domain controller is a tad tricky i would stick to 2k server if your are unsure.

sounds fair enough. I guess I can always "fiddle" some more with it on the side. As a matter of fact, I probaly should spend some more time with it. This gives me an excuse, um I mean reason to! ;)

true, but that could be worth not having to spend the $700+ for a legit copy of windows 2k server.
