Network setup question

I am setting up a simple network and I'd like to know if my wireless clients will be able to see a file server that is attached to another router upstream.

In this setup, will the laptops be able to see the wired PCs through normal windows filesharing? If not, what alternate setup do you suggest?

Edit: The file server is one of the wired PCs.

Where's the file server? Just one of the wired computers? ANyway, as long as the wireless router is NOT providing DHCP services to the wireless computers, they should be able to see them just fine because they will all be getting their IPs and such from the main router attached to the cable.

THat's a very standard way of setting up a network. you will basically be using the WIreless router asn a wireless Access Point.

Yeah, the file server is one of the wired PCs. If the wireless router is providing DHCP to the wireless clients then I have a problem, don't I?

Yes, you do. Just setup the wireless router to *not* be a router and instead just be a wireless repeater.

What he means is just setup the wireless router as an accesspoint instead. There should be an option to do this in your router's setup area. This will also disable your wireless routers DHCP, and thus uses the one from your top level router and that will put all systems, including the wireless ones, on the same IP network.

OR...

You can do away with your top leve router and use the wireless one as the only router. Since most wireless routers have a builtin switch, you should easilly be able to connect a couple wired systems straight to it.

Thanks, I'll have to give this a shot. Hopefully I can set up the wireless router as a switch successfully.

A lot of wireless routers have a built in 4-port switch. If they do not, there should be at least one Ethernet out port that can be plugged into a seperate switch.
