Network setup at my new apartment

Yo.

I'm moving into a new apartment in this huge, old house. The landlord and other tenant currently have a shared comcast connection via a wifi router.

I'm moving in to the other end of the house. The landlord admits that he has no idea what he's doing, so he's agreed to let me keep the cable modem in my apartment. Here's what I'd like to do:

Set up the modem and wifi router in my place, and set up another access point in another part of the house to ensure that there's enough coverage for us all. Drilling holes to physically connect the two wifi routers shouldn't be a problem, however I'd like to explore the idea of using one of the devices as a repeater. I'm aware that doing so will impact performance, but I've never done this before so I don't know how big that impact will be.

I'm separating myself from the public network between the other tenant and landlord by setting up a FreeBSD box as a firewall/gateway for my private network. Ideally, I'd like to encrypt all my traffic until it hits the modem, but haven't really thought about how to do that yet.

Anyone have any suggestions on various ways to connect the two APs, as well as any solutions I can use to encrypt my traffic? Unfortunately I've never encountered a situation where more than one AP is necessary, so I'm a bit inexperienced in that respect.

Thanks!
