I was wondering if there is any freeware out there to test the network for the ip addresses in use. I downloaded one and it had a trojan horse. Lucky I scanned it before I installed it. I am looking for something that is free without any trial period or malware/Adware etc. Thanks in advance.

You can always just do "ping ipaddress" from the command line. That would tell you if a computer is using the IP.

If you want to see what IP address is in use on a particular system you're sitting at:

http://whatismyip.com/
to get your public IP address as the rest of the world sees it.

start -> run -> cmd.exe then enter at the prompt
ipconfig /all
to see what your local / private IP addresses are.

If you want to scan the local area network for active PCs nmap is the tool, thought that will give the LOCAL IP address of those systems, not the 'global' NAT translated one.

ethereal in promiscuous mode is good for passively looking at who/what is on the lan assuming you are
on a hub not a switch..

WOW! Nmap is sweet! I can't believe that I have not come across this before. I'm not that good with the keyboard so the Zenmap GUI is great. Thanks for the help guys.

Ethereal is old, the new fork/branch of it is Wireshark.

Angryip works okay, but the older version could not find XP SP2 systems with the Windows firewall turned on.

This program finds almost anything.

Lookatlan

This used to work pretty well.
