Network recognition, yet cant share files

I had been running win 2000 pro wifi network which use to connect with my wifi XP pro laptop, I wanted to share my internet connection from desktop connected via LAN internet, as I enabled the sharing on win 2000 pro the network adaptor got curropted & the static IP gor cleared, which for some reason I could not get back & had to reload 2000 OS, now all is back but my wifi network has a strange problem, I can ping both the systems from each other they are responding, yet I cannot see the computer in the network.

I have tried giving the same name in the workgroup & also naming them seprately as desktop & laptop. When named seprately I can see the computer yet cant share the network.

I know some settings are wrong but cant figure out which one, need help.

firewall is switched off on XP, though I use zonealarm on both computers, I have given instruction to both for allowing the specific adaptors.

My confusion is more due to the fact that on Desktop I can see the laptop, but on laptop I cant see the desktop. From both systems I am getting ping perfectly.

I need to know should both computer use the same workgroup name or different.

whenever testing your ability to connect to the other machine, you should completely shutdown zonealarm. You also might want to try shutting down everything, restarting the router, than bringing it all back up.

Tried as per the suggestion shut down anti virus & firewall on both machines yet cant connect but can ping each other.

I am going crazy with this networking.

I meant shutdown your computers, sorry if I was unclear. Also, there is probably a reset button on your router, press that.
