Network recognition, yet cant share files/internet

I had been running win 2000 pro with my wifi XP pro laptop, I wanted to share my internet connection from desktop which runs internet connected via eithernet LAN card.
I inserted the IP address, the subnet, default gate, preferences, alt DNS server ID's in TCP/IP which enables me to connect to the internet. On the desktop the internet is running fine.

I shared both computer via administrator accounts using the same workgroups, 190.100.10.1 for desktop 190.100.10.2 for laptop it was working without internet sharing, this worked fine for few days, then I shared my internet & while doing so I had a warning that by default that the IP will be set to use 192.168.0.1 & i will loose the connectivity, else use the static IP given by your administrator.

On doing so I got internet sharing but have lost the network sharing, now I cannot share the 2 computers as it gives me an error "you might not have permission to use this network resource" which I fail to understand from where & what permission is it asking when I am signed with administrative rights on both machines, the guest account on XPpro laptop is also enabled.

Since I am new to basic networking I assume I am missing the very obivious, but cant figure out what.
Need help to get back with sharing. Have Idone any wrong settings or mistyped IP.
Need help.

Jack thanks for that link, I read that earlier too but have checked & confirm the following:
I have not use windows network wizard too many times only thrice.
firewall in xp is off, zonealarm is on with IP range mentioned as required.

Give a try to NetBEUI. At least you will ba able to share until you find the trouble.

:sun:

Thanks for the suggestion, I indeed tried that by switching off zone alarm on both computers + xp firewall off, doesnt work yet.

Even with zonealarm ON I am getting the ping from each other perfectly & as I mentioned my internet sharing is working fine within the same setup.

Yet I cannot see the 2 computers on each other network.

By cannot see, do you just mean in the network neighborhood like thing? If so, click start go to run and type in \\IP_ADDRESS where IP_ADDRESS is the ip address of the other computer.

Doing so i can see the shared folders on the other computer now, so finally something works, yet I cannot see the computers in the network.

On both computers at times I get "workgroup not accessible" error for some reason, other wise normally I can see desktop on desktop & laptop on laptop under network neighourhood, where as both the desktop & laptop should be visible on each other.

On ipconfig/all
I get the following which I want to confirm
on desktop the node type is Broadcast
on laptop the node type is mixed

is this ok or should it be same if so how can I change it.

Latest update as per n0cmonkey suggestion.

Now I have made a shared folder on both computers & I send the files to that shared folder & can see it on both computers, so as of now with this method I am able to surf the net as well as share the files/ folders but indirect way.

All the workgroup is same
I am signed as administrator on both machines
guset account is disabled on both (enabling them does not help at all)
zone alarm is on with IP range mentioned

I cannot yet see the 2 computers in the network directly but they are pinging to each other perfectly.
Any networking guru here to decode this problem now, I finally want to work the way it should work normally.

Thanks for the help so far.

Still continuing with the same problem, I am wondering could this be a virus problem preventing the network recogination.
My system was infected in past by Agbot & plexus virus but AVg caught them & it was cured.

Your ip addresses may not be in the same subnet.
Simple reminder is the last portion of the ip address only need to be different for those two machines.
eg. two machines should bave ip addresses like 10.196.5.2, 10.196.5.3

if it doesn't work provide both machines ip configuration details

Do you have antivirus program with firewall running (i.e. symantec/pccilin internet security)? Make sure you add the ip address your computers using in the "Exception List"/"Trusted" if u r using the firewall. I have experience one time like you, where i can ping the other computer using ip, but cannot ping using computer name. Try this and see whether it work or not.

Thanks for extra suggestion, I am using zyxel g220 on both computers reviewed here http://www.slcentral.com/g-220-wireless-usb-stick/

1.I am using the latest driver for zyxel V2.0

2.zonalarm on both computers with IP range mentioned (switching off the firewall does not solve the problem)

3.avg antivirus on both computers

4. workgroup is same on both "WORKGROUP"

5. signed on desktop win 2000 SP4 as "ADMINISTRATOR" NO PASSWORD

6. signed on laptop XPP SP1 as "RANJAN" with administrative rights, no password.

7. guest account is disabled on both, still the indrect sharing is working, enabling them does not help either.

8. IP settings
desktop 190.100.10.1
subnet 255.255.255.0

laptop 190.100.10.2
subnet 255.255.255.0

as far as I understand they are in the same subnet, correct me if I am wrong, as I am new to basic networking.

What was your logic in using 190.100.10.X as your IP address range? I would suggest sticking with convention and use real private addresses.

No logic as such I was told elsewhere to use so, so I used that.
Will using 192.168.0.1 work , please tell me more about real private IP addresses. I am new to networking.

Tweak XP a software for tweaking XP was the main culprit which was installed in the new laptop, as a last resort I uninstalled it & WAO!!!! its working all fine.

A lesson learnt here is that tweaking utilities do mess up with system settings.

Thanks all who gave answers.

Downloaded the latest version of TweakXP & tried with that too & the same problem resurfaced again, so surely that software was the main problem in network recogination.
