Hi, i have 2 computers beside each other. Each are connected to the net via wireless, which the router is located downstairs.

I want to xfer big files via a lan connection between the 2 computers as wireless is alot slower.

How would i do this. They both have lan ports and i have a cable.
 
what I do is take 2 cat 5 cables and plug them into a router than plug each one into a computer. That way i can have internet while transfering files. I dont think you can just plug a cable from one right into the other. I tried that a few years ago and couldnt make it work. But your best bet is just to plug them like how I said, than set up your network.

No you cant plug one into the other with a standard cable. You need a crossover cable. Its still CAT V just pinned different

Is it as simple as plugging it in and ill get a popup on xp pro? Or a little more complicated?
 
Once you hook the wired ports up with a crossover cable, you also need to give those network cards an IP address in the same range, otherwise they will not see each other. They also need to be in the same workgroup. If one is XP pro, which defaults to the workgroup named "workgroup", and the other system is XP Home, which the default workgroup is "mshome", then you will not be able to access each other.

You don't need a cross over if your one of your computers has a switching port, my dell m170 laptop has it, so I can use a standard cable but you have to manually specify an IP on both computers in the same range.
 
Just give each an static IP and put in the GW, DNS info from the ipconfig /all in the cmd prompt. You should be able to see the other PC after you setup a network shared folder.
