Network Question

I have one computer running Win98 with an external DSL modem. It is downstairs. I am going to get a computer running WinXP. Since the computers are on two different floors, and we have a laptop that might need to be hooked up too, wireless is probably the way to go.

First of all, I need to transfer a lot of files from this computer to the one I will be getting. But I also need to have good access to the internet on the computer upstairs.

What equipment do you recommend and how would I set this up? Thanks

If you're transfering stuff around the LAN, I would punch a few holes in the walls and make a 100Mbps network - if you need mobility for the laptop, you can always set the AP as a bridge and connect it to the LAN. Wireless is enough for sharing DSL, but if you get full-duplex 100Mbps, you can send up to 12MB/s

Well when a 802.11b device is bridging it is connecting to another bridge, though many AP will do both, meaning it can bridge and accept client PC's as well. Buying an AP with router capabilities IS an easy, and more and more affordable solution these days. If you have alot of data to transfer from dekstop to desktop, you might want to put a cheap wired NIC in it and transfer the data before you put a wireless card in. Oh, and 12.5 MB is the theoretical limitation of a 100Mb card, you will never see that kind of speed though.
