Yesterday when i got home, and went on my computer my internet wasn't working. I didn't care much and went to do some homework. Our network is just a my computer connected to the router via cable, and then the router is obviously connected to the modem. And then the router is wireless, and it connects wirelessly to my dad's computer. Then my dad came home, and saw that it wasn't working and was fustrated.. so he played around with the cables, and he plugged the cable from the modem into one of the 4 sockets of the router instead of plugging it into WAN, and the internet now works for him (wireless via router) and not for me. So then i plugged my computer directly into my modem, and no dice? I also tried swapping the cable to no avail.

So i have 2 problems, which i know are connected somehow.

1) my computer is not getting any internet.. either when plugged directly into the modem or my router, but it can bring up 192.168.1.1 when plugged into the router.

2) My dad's internet works wirelessly if and only if i plug the cable going from the modem to one of the 4 ports (even though it has normally been plugged into WAN and worked normally).

Sorry if im confusing you guys, but any idea how to fix these?

Your dad is now running without the protection of the router's NAT function, which acts as a kind of 'firewall' between your network and the rest of the internet. By plugging the modem into a LAN port the router no longer considers them different networks.

Did you do anything to the router? Change any settings? It can pretty much only be a router problem as you have proved the modem and the laptop are able to connect. Have you rebooted the router, aka, unplugged it and left it for a while to collect its thoughts before plugging it back in? Do that first.

If that doesn't work for you, try resetting the router. You will have to reset your configuration, but that should help you with your problem.

Your router is acting as a switch right now.

Because modem connected to LAN port on your gateway (guess no longer!), but wireless will be still active!

Unplug modem for 5 minute after fixing the cabling on your router. Which means modem goes back to WAN port.
