network problems

So every 3-6 months i get motivated and attempt to make my home network work, however each time i end up giving up after a couple of days of fruitless effort. Here is the basic problem...i've got a desktop and laptop both connected to my netgear wireless router. the desktop is connected by an ethernet cable and the laptop is connected wirelessly. They both connect to the internet fine, but i can't get them to talk to eachother. Whenever i try to ping from one machine to the other the connection times out. I've tried dissabling the firewall and any number of other things to get them to communicate, but nothing seems to work. Has anyone else experience this problem? If so, any suggestions?

I havn't had a chance to try the NetBeui thing, but does anyone have any suggestions as to why my two computers can't talk to eachother? Is this method even worth trying if i can't ping from one system to the other?
