I have XP home edition and there doesn't seem to be any way to password protect a folder shared over the network. XP prof. has an option to disable simple file sharing and that would then allow you to set a password but XP home doesn't have this option. Does this mean there is no way to set a password for a network share in XP home?
I have passwords for my shared folders on my w98 SE machine and XP can't access them. I can see the folder in "my network places" on the XP comp but when the enter password box comes I enter my password, click ok and nothing happens. The folder doesn't open, the enter password box just sits there. If I go into my w98 comp. and remove the passwords the XP machine can access them just fine. Any ideas why this would be?
Also does XP home edition not work with netBEUI. After finding that there may not be a way to password protect folders I thought using netBEUI would be safer than file sharing over TCP. I got the netbeui .inf file off of the XP cd and it looked like it installed ok but it doesn't seem to work. Nothing shows up in "my network places." netBEUI is installed on the w98 comp also and worked just fine before I got XP and had w98 on both computers.
