network problem

I have 2 machines connected to a router(both running (98SE). Setup is as follows; USR cable modem into a Linksys 4 port Etherfast router, then out to my desktop(1), and my laptop(2). Both machines see, and can transfer files to each other, yet one of them (my laptop)cannot hook up to the web. I get errors such as "cannot connect to the server". This is a new problem which just started. Before...there were no problems, I had access to the web through both machines.
When trying to connect to a dialup ISP at work, I get the same results, and sometimes I'll get a DNS error. Although, if I dialup to AOL,I get through, and can browse most of AOL, until it tries to send me out to the WWW. Then I get these DNS, and/or server errors.

Sound familiar to anyone? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Which version of AOL do you have installed? I know from fixing a few client workstations, that AOL takes over your network settings by making your dial up adapter the default way to the internet, then it changes the settings so to not allow any other device i.e.(your NIC) from accessing the internet.

Try deinstalling aol, then reconnectiong to the internet or your LAN.
This should do the trick and show you what I just explained above.

Hope this helps

Thanx, but no, that did not help. The weird thing is that I can see the laptop from the desktop, and can transfer files back and forth, which makes me feel that the network is good. Yet in Network Neighborhood, while I can see both machines from the desktop, I see no machines from the laptop.

When I click on "Entire Network" on the laptop, I get "unable to browse network. The network is not accessible."

When I used the "start, Find, computer", desktop(from the laptop). It finds it, but cannot connect to it. It tells me it is not accessible.

I'm totally lost with this one...anyone have any more ideas????

If you provide us with a list of the adapters and services in your networking setup, it might help :p

The adapter on the laptop is a Linksys PCM100 Etherfast 10/100 PCMCIA . On the Desktop it's a NDC 10/100 fast ethernet PCI adapter. I've got a Linksys Etherfast Cable/DSL Router 4 port(BEFSR41). The desktop seems to be working fine.
Torchem, I'm new to this, what do you mean by "services"? If you're asking... I've got all the proper TCP/IPs, IPX/SPXs, NetBEUIs,Client for Microsoft, Family logon, File and printer sharing.

I've tried going directly from the laptop to the modem, bypassing the router. I've also tried swapping cables. None of this helps.
