Network Problem

Yesterday, I replaced the old network card (BNC/Coax and Cat5/10Mbps combo card) with a dedicated 10/100 network card in Dad's P4 1.6GHz. The MoBo is an ASUS P4B-M.

The new card is using a realtek RTL8139 chip. I installed the drivers and then used windows update to update them to the latest version.

Windows claims that there is "Limited or no Connectivity" on the network. In control panel>system>device manager>network adapters, i can see the network card, 1394 (firewire) adapter, and a WAN Miniport (IPX) #2.

There is a problem with the WAN miniport - according to control panel, "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)".

But when i try to update the drivers, windows says it cant find a better match for my hardware.

So, i can still share files & printers, but i cant connect to the internet with any of the other computers.

Sorry the post's so long, but i tried to answer all your questions b4 you asked them.

Anyone have any idea what's going on?...

Go to Control Panel > Network Connections using an Administrator-class account, and right-click the connection > Properties > somewhere. Remove the IPX/SPX protocol (you want TCP/IP).
 
mechBgon - I'll try that when i get home. But wont I need IPX/SPX for multiplayer games?

Jiggz - Yeah, i can see the Realtek NIC in device manager, and it's doesn't appear to have any problems.

Sounds like you're not using a router. I'd suggest: try using one, instead of requiring that the ASUS P4B-M machine to always be powered up, in order for the internet connection to work. There's several wired routers which include a built-in USB printer port, which would also allow for networked printing.
Such as:
TRENDnet TW100-BRF114U 10/100Mbps Cable/DSL Firewall Router w/ USB Print Server
D-Link DI-704UP 10/100Mbps Broadband Router plus USB Print Server
U.S. Robotics USR8001 10/100Mbps Broadband Router with USB Print Server

 
Vailr: I can't get DSL where i live - only dialup or sattelite. So that pretty much cancels out any chance of using a router.


Anyway, I've basically fixed the problem now. I re-installed the old card, uninstalled the drivers, and re-re-installed the new card.
