Network Problem

I recently bought a linksys router for my computer. As soon as I installed it, I noticed that I couldn't send or recieve programs through ICQ, nor could I download programs from Bearshare, Limewire, etc.
I updated my version of Windows (XP Home) fully and now I can't even access secure sites (MSN mail for example) nor can I log into MSN Instant Messenger. (Though the problem extends further than just MSN programs)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm guessing there's some router configuration blocking these programs? Can you access the router configuration and see if any ports are being blocked? Also, is the XP Firewall on or off?

Some of these routers have built in firewalls. They can sometimes be very restricitive. You can get into the configuration software in the router by using your browser and typing in the IP address for the router in the address line, i.e. 192.168.0.1. Many are configured to that specific address or something nearly the same, the manual will tell you what the address is. Once in it you can open ports and possibly lower the overall security level. On your own system it sounds like the security settings are set very high. I presume you can get to the internet so it sounds like security. Did you install XP SP2 Beta? I did and had to lower the level on many things after installing it. It really locks the computer up far too much for someone who is cautious anyway. These are the things to examine. I have also found that things like ZoneAlarm are very intrusive to stopping normal activities on the network. When I get a machine on my home network with ZA on it, I have to turn it off just to browse my internal network and get files off my setup system. I personally don't use hardly any such things on my system, and am inside a router, and have had very little trouble with worms, trojans, viruses, etc.
