network problem

My dad is running win98 on his computer, and he has been suffering from some major problems....his internet is down, and he has had some problems with improper directory names. I ran spybot s&d and did a full scandisk, which removed the improperly named directories, and most, if not all of the spyware, and he is still suffering from some problems.... Internet is still not working, and norton e-mail protection fails on start up, as well as ad aware. I updated to latest virus definitions, but norton seemed to be scanning the same files over and over again when I tried a full system scan. Also, I ran some of the latest norton virus removal tools, but came up empty. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

Is he using dial up or what?

You can try slaving his hard disk onto a working computer and checking his disk like that. Or backup whatever he needs and do a format and reinstall.

Yeah I guess that is important info =P... I am sharing a cable connection through winxp.....but it has worked well for months with no problems and no settings have been changed

It sounds like Dad has a virus.
Try booting from the NAV CD and run a virus scan from the menu.
Remember that the virus definition on the CD will be used and not the latest one on the HD.
