Network Problem

I am trying to network my pc (winxp pro) and my laptop (xp home) and am having a lot of problems.

everything is connected ok with a crossover cable, it shows up as connected to LAN but nothing seems to be able to transfer.

I have set the IP's of TCP/IP to 192.168.0.1/2 but I can't ping them from each other

does anyone know exactly what needs to be configured and how?

is it worth upgrading the laptop to xp pro?

is there any resources that go over the process in detail?

The network should work properly whether it is Win98, XP. Home, XP Pro, or any other Network capable PC OS.
