This may belong in the network section, but I thought I'd try it here first.

Printers, without a doubt, are my Kryptonite.

I recently purchased a Xerox Phaser 6500DN. I've hooked it up to my network and I would like to share it through my Windows 2008 R2 server.

It's a mixed network (macs + PCs).

I was wondering if someone could give a little advice as to what printing protocol(s) I should be using. I don't want to use them all for security reasons.

Protocols:
TCP/IP
LPR
Port9100
IPP
WSD
FTP
SMB
Bonjour
Telnet
SNMP

Also, any preference on PostScript vs. PCL?

Thanks!

The device has its own print server. No need to deploy over WS2K8 R2.

Configure the device on your network and use TCP/IP port 9100

Set to a static IP

Install PCL 6 drivers fresh from xerox.

Option 2 would be to install printer on the network + on the server. Deploy to other computers thru vbscript / group policy.

Hey Compman55,

Thanks for the advice.

The idea behind sharing the printer through WS2K8 R2 was to make it more secure and only share it with specific accounts, rather than anyone on the network. Any thoughts on that idea?

I was hoping to have it so the printer wouldn't be listed in when people are looking for a printer to install on the network. Is that even possible?
