Network over internet question

I was wondering if there was any software that you could use to trick windows into thinking that a computer was on your network. For instance, my friend is on the internet some where else and I click on my network places and can see his computer. Is that possible? Also, would any routers on his side mess that up? thanks!

in therory you could do this if you just have the right ports open i believe, but ISP filter SMB traffic for obvious reasons, in reality VPN is your best bet...as for the xbox doing this, no unless you set up a VPN router.

Hmmm .... if he's sharing and isn't behind a firewall you can go to your RUN menu and type-in
\\friends-ip-address .... but junmullen is correct, a lot of ISPs don't let that traffic in. I used to do this all the time when Comcast was the only cable modem provider, me and everyone I knew were on one big network.
