Network NOOB needs help

Greetings all,

I've got a noobish sort of question, I have a home network setup to share files and printers. Three computers connected to a D-Link gigabit router for internet access and sharing. I have the fourth port plugged in with a bare cable so that when friends ask me to help them with their comp, I just reach down and have a connection for the net.

What I need is another port on that router so I can connect a network printer and have all connected PCs share that via ethernet.

Can I hook up a switch to the 4th port on the router and plug the printer and the spare cable into that switch for internet and printer sharing? I don't know if this would work - I suspect not, but I thought I'd ask here.

Yes. 🙂

check out "star topology" (whith quotes) on google. basically, what ethernet is, is a star topology. you can run as many hubs and switches as you want provided there is never more then one route from any one point to any other point. having that would create havoc with end user level routers and switches.
