basically i have two comps running xp home and i would like to have them running on a network, i am going to be using wireless becasue i do not want to run cable up the stairs and also i can move the pc around the room without worry..

i have a broadband connection and i was looking to what the best set up would be, i was thinking of getting a router and plug the broadband into that, and then just configure both of my pc's to communicate with the router, i would just like some info on what would be the best setup and also recomendations for hardware brands to use etc...

i would basically like the 2 pc's to share the broadband connection and also be able to communicate with each other wirelessly,

question will the comps be able to communicate on the LAN and access the internet at the same time

thanks in advance for your advice... 😀😀

In the configuration that you specified, internet device plugs into wireless router, each computer connects to the router for network connectivity, sure, both computers will be able to access each other as well as the Internet at the same time. The only security concern I have in that configuration is the relative vulnerability of the wireless access point.

after you've gotten the wireless connection going, make sure you _enable_ WEP/WPA(whatever your access point uses) and if the access point has the ability, block all wireless MAC addresses EXCEPT the one that your computer uses. That will block all incoming connections from the people that manage to get past your WEP/WPA encryption method.

That's the basic use of broadband routers. So it should work out fine for you.

I have similar needs as you do. My Cable comes in downstairs and I can't really run a cable upstairs to my office. It was just easier to go Wireless.

I am using:

All you need is:
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=36&prid=635

put those in your two Machines, set the network up using WAP or WEP security (it's covered in manual) and you'll be good to go.

I, personally, move a lot of data between my two PC's, so I ended up using a wired network in my Office and connect to my Wireless network via:

It works out extremely well in my case.

And yes, All PC's will have access to the internet.

I love my Switch to the Wireless Net set up. It allows me to move data between my two pc's very quickly without eating up the limited bandwidth of the wireless network.

Just remember to secure your WiFi LAN. Use WAP or WEP, Don't leave the default SSID name and Turn off SSID broadcasting.

As I mentioned, yes, you'll be able to access the internet from both PC's at the same time.

I forgot to add:

If there is a significan distance between your Computers and Router, you may wish to consider replacing the stock antena with a high-gain one. You can pick them up at any compusa and they are very easy to replace.
