I have a small network of 20-30 devices and this morning somethign strange is happening on the network. Stuff is responding very slowly. I was wondering if there was a good network monitoring package that could give me a look at what is going on.

A software package that can tell me what traffic is going where. What IP address is sending out the most traffic etc.

Free or Demo software is obviously best so I can find out now but I'm also interested in recommendations for retail packages for the future

I don't think ethereal can do do remote network monitoring. I am not sure? I've never used Openview. If your just looking to capture traffic on a server then ethereal will work or even network monitor. I know SMS can but its not even close to being free.

I stand corrected. Ethereal or just Network Monitor will work. I assume all your stuff is on one subnet so you should be able to see all the traffic. Hopefully you are using no hubs :Q

One of the great things about ethereal is that it can work just about anywhere. Especially with tools like tcp/win dump. You can collect using one tool and read the logs using ethereal. :D
