Network monitoring software?

I just want to monitor total bandwidth going through my gateway/router/AP and look at anything, according to MAC addresses, that has a valid connection. My current router is a Cisco E1550 that used to have DDWRT, but wireless N didn't work, so back to stock firmware for me.

I loved DDWRT's monitoring, logging, administrative built-in stuff... is there anything that I can install on a host inside the network that can monitor everything?

I'm willing to spend money. Should I just buy something that's compatible with DDWRT and supports wireless N? Solid, reliable VPN would be nice too, but not necessary.

Is the only way to do this to buy a device acting as a gateway to monitor this stuff? Any suggestions?

Flash Shibby Tomato. He has specific E1550 builds under the RT-N branch. Every single one does VPN too.

Just got this up and running set to my last router's config. Had a scan button for checking out the signal strength for my neighbours 2.4GHZ APs!!! Chose a relatively open channel and it doubled my xfer speeds! Nice.

:awe:

Going to look into setting up either an OpenVPN or PPTP server after we move this weekend. Will setup DDNS in conjunction, etc. Thanks for the recommendation. This appears much better than DDWRT so far.
