I've scratched my head a few days over this and can't find the exact cause. When I click any link to a network folder or even "my computer" it takes anywhere from 1 second to 20 seconds to open. We have five pc's on the network and one file server. The problem is with wired and wireless connections. Here is the timeline of this problem.
a)Had same hardware (5 pc's and one server) with no issues
b)installed a new HD in the file server(500GB)
c)changed the Computer Name of the server. (homefile01 to file01)
d) Now have delays on every pc.

What is accessed from server:
1)4 users documents
2)Media, shared folder, etc.
3)"user" share (mozilla files, Outlook backups) .....not user profile location.

I've made sure all invalid shares on the server were removed, deleted invalid shares on the 5 pc's My Network Places ( ohyes... these are all XP machines with the file server being server 2003). I've removed any mapped drives looking at the old server name.

I know you can disable the pc's from searching for network shares but the configurations of the pc's never changed and never had this issue till now.

I would normaly just fight with it till I find it but others in the house are getting sick of the delays. haha.

The issue is most likely the computers being configured with something still pointing to the old server name. You could try one of 2 things:

1 - Rename the server back to it's original name temporarily and see if the issue is resolved.
2 - Create an A record in your DNS server to have the old file server name point to the IP address of the server. Once complete, disable strict name checking on the file server to it will accept requests to shares from DNS names other than its own - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281308/en-us
