Question Network keeps dropping on 12 year old build. GA-970A-D3 Gigabyte. What to do.

Internet keeps dropping and message no DNS. Do I need a new network card or new Router. Those were my first thoughts. Or do I have deeper problem?

Well if this is the only device having this problem than I would think it is the network card. Have you tried a different cable to rule that out? Or connect to a different port on the router?

Does the motherboard have the latest BIOS on it?
Does the network card have the latest drivers installed?
Have you tried reinstalling the OS?
Have you tried what In2Photos suggested (New ethernet cable/different port on Router)
Does router have latest firmware on it?
When was the last time router was rebooted?
Have you tried setting a static IP address/Subnet mask/Default Gateway/DNS server entries on the problem machine?

Router was problem.

Moved EEROS unit to sys and plugged in. All fine.

Actually New puppy made it hard to read some of pages!!

Tried new ports but no help. Moved all around but new cables hard as most in wall.

Yes, they do go bad just like any other electronics. Mine just died a few months ago and was about 3 years old. The new one works great.

A couple years ago I was having a very similar problem. (No internet, DNS lookups failing but IP/ping OK.)

I reinstalled Windows for an SSD swap and the problem stopped. Just FWIW.

Consumer routers are not made to go the distance anymore. They generate heat more than those from the past (I have a linksys Wrt54g still working). If you go with a ‘business class’ router, you’ll get longer life, but it also depends on the design. I personally like the Protectli devices and using a custom setup while keeping the WiFi separate.
