Network issues

Here's the issue. I have been having problems with my file server for quite some time. It's an old mobo (by now - Abit AV8; AMD Athlon64 3200+), but I purchased it off of eBay last year. Every so often I would lose connection over the switch (while moving data to and from the file server). Since I rarely used it for a primary machine I thought it was the ethernet adapter card (US Robotics gigabit) so I replaced it with a new Linksys gigabit card. I was still having issues so I thought maybe it was my gigabit switch. (Note: I only use cat6 cabling)

Well, today I added a fourth 1.5TB hard drive (for my movies) (currently have 8 drives on the file server - 1 OS and 7 for data) and started copying data over from the smaller drives. While doing so (a relatively long time) I kept losing LAN connection. Since this is my main machine while my main rig is down it was maddening since I basically couldn't use the internet (in all practicality).

Remember, I bought those pci expansion cards for the SATA drives. Is moving data over the PCI bus somehow hosing the LAN adapter (also PCI)? I'd like to hear from someone who has experience with this. It's a shame to have to ditch the entire platform, but I do desire stability. It's something I will probably do in the future. Is moving this data saturating the PCI bus? It seems logical to me, but it is frustrating. So, if I was to plan on a future build what exactly would be the ideal platform for a file server so that data could flow smoothly over the network?

I am not a network guy so how would I go about doing this procedure? (Googled first before asking 😀) Uncheck the QoS Packet Scheduler for the adapter?

Sorry on the late reply. I thought I replied to your post earlier today and it was gone. :|

Anyways, I figured out how to disable flow control. As soon as I did that I lost connectivity to the network. Kind of ironic. I copied data to another drive last night (after disabling flow control) and only lost connectivity to the network twice. It was not a continuous event (as it was previously). This time the data transfer was between two drives on the same pci sata card (previouisly it was between drives on two different pci cards. So, I'm not sure if the problem is solved or not. I noticed this problem (file server losing connectivity to the network.) before when transferring data over the network (not between drives inside the file server). Previously, I thought it might be an issue with my switch, but since I had this problem yesterday just when transferring data between drives inside the file server that it must be an issue with the ethernet card or the motherboard (settings or hardware). Since I replaced the ethernet card recently with a new Linksys one and I'm still having issues then it must either be the settings (on the card, motherboard, or windows) or an hardware issue with the motherboard.

Any advice would be appreciated.
