Morning,

I have two win 2k machines with service pack 2 connected via crossover cable with broadband ADSL installed on one machine.
We've had this connection working before, and then it stopped, then worked, stopped. It's annoyed me now and I'm sick of messing with settings. ICS was set up and client was set to 192.164 etc and set to use host ip to connect.

I'm thinking of installing a hardware solution but I'm not sure which I need, a router or switch?

Also I'm going to upgrade my comp soon (hopefully within the next month) which will mean my old rig can be converted to a server, is it worth still getting a router/switch if this machine becomes the server?

Any help will be great.

Thanks,
keep well,
Kilcaff.

Welcome to the forums.

You may want to start by reading this. A router is a very good idea, imo, and they start at very reasonable prices. Most on this site would agree that your basic entry level routers are all pretty much the same, but no one will be surprised if I plug SMC. Most of us have found that the router solution is quite stable once you get it set up. A server is viable, but with two computers I wonder how necessary it is (unless you're planning some expansion or whatnot). I've found Win2k Pro SP2 to be very stable and trouble-free (n.b., I don't game).

FWIW.
