Network ICE hits back over Gibson jibes

Link

Network ICE has responded angrily to claims by security consultant Steve Gibson that its product, BlackICE Defender is "lame" and claims that it is "actually good for something fly in the face of logic and reality".

pretty nasty and funny stuff here 🙂

I don't like Steve's attitude (maybe it's just me, but he sometimes comes across as arrogant), but I think he's right about Black Ice being trash. The company can put it's spin on it and say it's an "intrusion detection product" instead of a firewall, but the bottom line is that blackice does not defend you against trojans or any programs threatening your network from the inside out. ZoneAlarm does a very good job at that.

Further, while Black Ice people whine about BI being installed after the infection has taken place (they're saying that's why it didn't work), ZoneAlarm was also installed after the infection took place, but it had no trouble detecting (and blocking) the trojan communications.

I dont care what it is "supposed to be". Obviously it is a sub-standard product, and whats more you have to pay for it. ZoneAlarm is better and free. Oh, I'm having such a hard time choosing 😛

<< As far as I can tell from reading Mr. Gibson's description, he installed BlackICE on the infected machine AFTER the infection had occurred and AFTER the connection with the 'control program' had already been established. This is part of the reason for the supposed 'failure' of BlackICE. >>

Shouldn't it still question any kind of strange port openings no matter when the software was installed?

<< BlackICE has never claimed to be a virus protection product. >>

And no one claimed that subseven is only a virus.

In related news, I saw a posting on the usenet today for a mpeg of Trish Stratus in the shower. It was 10 parts and even labeled as an .exe. 🙂

I'll take my chances. Wait, who is Trish Stratus?

Blackice is lame, it should be billied as a monitoring program, not a defending program.
