I'm trying to accomplish the following:

- Share a 56K dial-up connection between two Windows XP computers using Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).
- Share files and a printer.

Both computers are connected together using an Airlink 4 port AR504 Cable/DSL router with CAT5E cables, wired to the T568B pattern. I connected the CAT5E cables to the #1 and #2 ports on the Cable/DSL router. I also ran the Windows "Network Setup Wizard" to set the workgroup, computer name, and computer description as well as enable file/printer sharing. The 56K dial-up connection is also set to "share."

Yet, when I open up (one either computer) the function to view the computers listed in the workgroup, I am never able to see the other computer.

Lastly, only one of the computers is able to access the router setup software, and this is the "client" computer connected to the #2 port on the router.

So, after talking with a few people, I went back and disabled all firewalls on both computers and reset the workgroup name to the default MSHOME. However, I'm now able to see the Internet Gateway connection, but no data is being transferred even though the iinternet is connected on the host pc, and I still can't see the other computers when attempting to view other computers within the same workgroup. (File/Printer sharing is enabled)

Thanks,
Michael

Mike

Sure OT gets more traffic, but then you will get 50 responses that dont help you at all, whereas Networking takes a couple minutes, but then you get a useful response.

actually, it's not so difficult.

quick and easy.

static ip addresses for both computers.

192.168.0.100 for pc with modem dialup (PC1)
192.168.0.101 for pc that doesn't have the dial up (PC2)

on both machines set 192.168.0.100 as gateway and the dns server.

your subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0

you don't need to enable ics if you have a router.

this will only work as long as PC1 has first established an internet connection.

QFT!

What happened to you is this: the router gave your computers Ip addresses with its' dhcp server. It told your computers it was the gateway. That was going nowhere fast:p

Following Platinumgold's directions, that can't happen again, and you are using only the switch feature of the router.
