Network Gateway software in a Virtual Machine..

Just wondering if its technically possible to run network gateway software like Astaro, inside a virtual machine, and work securely. I'm linking there might be issues with packets flowing through the host OS. I do see Virtual PC and VMware has the option of setting a guests OS networking to use a physical NIC, at which point the host OS 'loses' access to that NIC.
