Network folders annoying...

darkeneddays

Senior member
Ok,I've got 2 PCs set up on a gigafast switch. All transfers and such work fine however whenever someone browses one of my shared folders it changes the location from ,example, C:\stuff to \Demon\\c\stuff (or something similar).
No big deal except when I access the folder on my own PC transfers and such take forever.I have to manually rename the target back C:\stuff in order for it to act right.
Anyways to prevent this,as it is starting to piss me off....

Also is there any way to make ALL folders on my C: drive accessable by others on the network(Program Files, etc).WinXP has just kinda decided others can't touch files in certain SHARED folders, but can browse them.A fix for this would be appreciated too.

Thanks🙂

If you are going to have those shared folders accessed all the time by both computers, I would consider setting up a samba server, placing the items in question in the public folder. The path would never change, and you'd have some built in backup capabilities, as well as the ability to access the files easily on the road.

I'm not entirely sure what the problem is or what you want to happen. When you access a windows machine remotely, you use a (UNC) path in the form \\<computer name>\<share>\<file> when you access it locally, it's in the form <drive>:\<file>

Mapping a network drive might have the desired effects - go into my computer, click 'tools' and choose 'Map Network Drive' You can then use a spare letter such as N: to refer to a share on a remote PC.

The problems you are having with access are going to be due to permissions used. If you make sure that you log on at both machines using accounts with the same username and password and give that account administrative rights, it ought to fix the problem.

Ok I'll try to clarify this a bit.Sorry for the confusion...

Only 2 machines are on the network. Both use XP pro.And both have only one account on each set for admin. One is called Leslie the other is called Demon.

When my wife is on here PC(Leslie) and wants to grab something out of a folder on mine, she will browse to it and grab the file as normal.Let's say she gets it from C:\stuff.
The next time I open C:\stuff it is instead targeted as \demon\\c\stuff. Opening the folder even takes longer than it should.Getting files from it on my PC acts as though it is going through my wifes PC and then back to mine(As in I get a progress bar wanting me to wait 2 minutes when there should be no wait). To correct the situation I have to go to the folders properties and change the target back to c:\stuff.Once that is changed, all is well again.Hopefully that made a little more sense.

As far as folder rights,I have my entire C: drive set to share. Some obvious folders(Program files for example) are blocked. However folders that have no reason to be blocked and are shared(as in got the little hand under it) can be browsed but not altered by other users.

Thannks for the help so far....hopefully I can get this straight.

Firstly, are the two accounts you mentioned identical ie. do they have the same username and password?

I'm a little confused as to which folders are remote and which are local. When you say 'When my wife is on here PC(Leslie) and wants to grab something out of a folder on mine, she will browse to it and grab the file as normal.Let's say she gets it from C:\stuff.' is that transfer using the network? Is she grabbing a file from Demon?

Also, when you say 'The next time I open C:\stuff it is instead targeted as \demon\\c\stuff. Opening the folder even takes longer than it should.' are you opening a local folder and if so, how are you opening it?

Geez, this is harder to explain than I thought...

Ok, lets just call the PCs A & B.
Both PCs have different UN/PW but both accounts have admin rights.

When someone on PC A browses a folder on PC B,the "path" for that particular folder changes from it's normal "local" path(c:\stuff) to a network path(\PC B\\c\stuff).
So lets say the folder c:\stuff was altered to the network path of \PC B\\c\stuff.When browsing that folder locally(from PC B) the altered folder(s) take longer to open and transfer data within them. In order to make the folder act like it should I must right-click,properties, and manually change the target field back to c:\stuff.

Both PCs are on the same network(MSHOME) also.
Not sure if I can explain it any better than that....but thanks for sticking with this🙂

Ok, lets just call the PCs A & B. Both PCs have different UN/PW but both accounts have admin rights.
Thats the reason you're having difficulty accessing certain folders. You're currently browsing the other PC as a 'guest' user and as such windows shuts bits of it off from you. You need to create another account on each machine so that each user has accounts with the same UN/PW and admin rights.

Are you using Simple File Sharing? I'm having trouble grasping the path problem you're having as I've never encountered it before and i'm not sure how or why you're running into it.
