Network Dummy

Hello,
I just ordered a Linksys 4 port DSL router (BERFSR41) to link my wife's computer to the DSL we have. She is going to kill me if she has to continue using my computer to surf. 😀 I have no problem with the physical installation of the unit and NIC card on her computer. However, the software setup is another story. I am network stupid. I have already found a couple of excellent links here on this Forum that will help me a great deal. I have a few days to study and intend to do so!
What I am asking is for any hints, tips or nightmares you might want to share that could help me with this: Specificaly with the Linksys and also not so specificaly. I have Pacific Bell DSL and a Westell WireSpeed external DSL modem and both machines will be running Win98. Trust me, I will RTFM! However, these don't always tell the whole story. Can you help me out a bit? Thanks in advance for any information you can share.

First thing I would do is start to fool around with the network settings before you try to hook up the DSL. If you can get a network without the DLS there, adding it will be alot easier.

Agree w/Cenalian. I'm setting up, for the second time now, my cable modem (@Home) and two (to be four) machines. Step 1: Make sure your LAN works first. (In my case, the wired LAN, followed by the wireless.) Add the internet last, and bake until done. (You, that is. 😀 ) And, good luck. There are more like you out here (like me) than you might believe.

Personally, I would recommend reading the QuickStart documentation that came with the Linksys. It's very clear and very simple and should get you on your way with no hassles.

Hello again!
I appreciate your comments. In regards to setting up the network first, let me see if I understand correctly. What you are saying is just use the Linksys to first network the two computers. Then add the DSL line from the modem and go from there? I used a Netgear hub about 8 months ago and had the two connected pretty well from what I remember, except I couldn't get the shared printer thing working. However, I couldn't even begin to tell you how I did that.😱 I am sure the Linksys will have documentation for that. Besides, her computer has been replaced since then and so has mine. The Netgear is just gathering dust.
I will certainly check out the Quick start documentation also. Any other tips here? I appreciate all imput, believe me!😉

Yes. Set up the network first without a connection to the internet. As long as you can see both computers, move files between them and not have any problems, then internet access shouldn't be a problem either.
