Network doesn't "work" when I first bootup.

Right now, I know my NIC is pretty much crap, seeing it can't even reliably operate at 100mbit speed, but I've got another problem I'd like to fix. Whenever I first startup my computer, it connects to the network, and sends out packets, but it doesn't receive ANY packets in return. The system event viewer in win2k says "The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetbiosSmb because another computer on the network has the same name. The server could not start. "

I'm not using DHCP, but there are only 3 devices on my network, and each has it's own IP. To get my computer to connect correctly to the network, all I have to do is disable and reenable my network locally. It's not a major deal, but it's annoying. Can anyone help me figure out if there's anything I could change (software wise) to fix this problem?

change the machine name.

in W2K:
* Right-click "My Computer"
* Click "Properties"
* Click "Network Identification" tab
* Click "Properties" button
* Type in a unique computer name in "Computer name:" field
* Reboot when prompted

Thanks, but I swear I've done that before. *sigh*

I'll try again, and if it works, I'll send you much gratitude. In the form of another reply to this thread. 🙂

try reinstalling the hardware through the device manager, and the software. Since you just changed the name and you have said the nic isn't very good, it might not have updated the computer name in its logs.

Well, yesterday I went out and bought a 15$ after rebate Linksys NIC.

All problems vanished. My network works the way it's supposed to.

Goodbye netgear, and good riddance!
