I have a weird problem with a Win98 machine (intel 536EP V.92 modem) that will connect to the network, however none of the window's programs (IE, Netscape, Mozilla, Opera, Outlook, Eudora, WS_FTP) will not connect. All of these programs give the same type of error - DNS error or Network socket not connected.
Before all of this happened, I downloaded SpyBot and found New.net on the problem computer. I don't know where it came from, but it annoys me that the internet has so much spyware embedded in programs. I removed the instances of it from the registry and it's files. At first the network worked. However after several reboots later these problems cropped up. I tried looking up this spyware, and found that some strange network "winsock" is enabled. It could be this, however I have tried everything other than FORMAT C: /s /u to correct this problem. Is there any main file for network connection that can be replaced, if the spyware damaged it?
The odd thing about this is that I have this computer as a server and I am writing from the other connected computer without any problems.
Yes, there is a firewall (Sygate 5.0) on the problem computer, however I have uninstalled the program/reboot/reconnect. None of the browsers worked. Did this same thing with the server software with no avail.
Uninstall/install all of the network drivers for the ethernet (VIA onboard) and modem. No change.
Reinstalled Win98 - no change. (no reformat, just setup)
Under DOS, I can IPconfig /all and ping without any troubles. It detects the modem's IP address and the Ethernet IP address.
It almost seems that the network connection is looking for a proxy before allowing the window's network programs to work.
