Network Connection Icon Red X after setting up VPN Server

After setting up a VPN server on my Windows 7 computer at home I noticed that after connecting to it that my Network Connections icon in the task bar is showing a red X over it. Look at the screen shot below.

Notice that my regular network connection is fine, but it shows the RAS (Dial In) Interface with no Internet Connection. I believe that the network connection icon is reflecting this RAS connection. My question is how do you get the network connections Icon to show the status of my regular network connection?

I've tried to close explorer.exe and then restarting it with no luck.

open up network connections:

Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections

click advanced and then advanced settings.

Check the bind order. If the RAS is at the top, you could try moving below the Network connection.

Windows does some wierd things and does not always follow the ip route table. The bind order will trump routing and could be causing the issue you see.

Just a guess.

I looked at the binding order and the local area connection is on top and the RAS connection is on the bottom. I tried moving the order around but that didn't help.

Can you disable the RAS interface?

I just hid the icon. It seems to work like the check engine light on a car. It only shows up if there is an issue.

LMAO! That is exactly what I did! Out of sight out of mind.


Stuart, if I disable it then I can not connect to my VPN.
