network card screwed up computer

I just installed a Linksys 10/100 network card, and now I can't get online. I'm able to dial up and connect to my ISP, but whenever I try to connect to a web site in IE or Netscape, they crash (illegal operation).

I then tried removing the network card and uninstalling it; that didn't help. I tried reinstalling Dial Up Networking, that didn't help. I tried different combinations of PCI cards, still not helping.

the network card was sharing an IRQ with my SBLive, but I fixed that, now it's sharing with the HPT370 controller. either way internet doesn't work.

what did this network card do, and how am I supposed to fix it? I need to get online on that computer...

thanks in advance

my specs:
KT7-RAID motherboard
Radeon 32mb DDR
SBLive5.1 in PCI slot #3
Elsa modem in slot #4
Network card was in slot #6

It sounds like a winsock problem I had. Try ripping the winsock and winsock2 folders out of the registry in the following places(you can open the registry by going to start and then to run and typing in regedit). Don't worry if some of em aren't there.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Winsock2
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Services > Winsock
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > System > CurrentControlSet > Services > Winsock2

After doing this, restart. I'd take the NIC out before doing this if I were you. After restarting make sure that the Winsock and Winsock2 stuff that you removed has been reinstalled. This should fix the problem, although it might require a after the one upon which it reloads the winsock and winsock2 stuff. It took me 4 months to figure this one out. Good Luck and hope this helps.

This problem seems to be created by WS and/or WS2 trying to connect throguh your NIC and refusing to connect throguh your modem.

I'll give that winsock thing a try. but will the network card work with the modem? I need to get at least that working since I need it for college, but I'd rather not take the modem out since I'll be home every once in a while, and I'll need internet access.

if anyone else has any ideas, the IRQ's are:
SBLive5.1 and modem both on 5 (I can't get this to change)
Radeon on 10
9 is free, SBLive used to be there until I moved it to another PCI slot
network card is on 11 with the HPT370 controller

it worked, thanks! I had to reinstall DUN after removing the registry entries, but the entries are back now. but now what do I do when I want to actually put the NIC in? I'm guessing the same problem will come up...

For some reason, network cards are very particular about what PCI slot they go in. I have had many headaches that were solved by simple putting the network card in a different slot. The rule of thumb that has always worked for me is to put the network card in the PCI slot that is farthest from the processor.

Good Luck
