Network Card causing internet access problem !!! HELP !!!

I have a machine with a 56K Internal modem that I've been using healthily for almost a year now. Last night, I plan to install an additional component - a NIC card, an ISA network card to be exact. And now ..... internet access doesn't work anymore. My modem would dial and the connection would show in the system tray. But my web-browsers(IE and Navigator) would not make it out to cyberspace. Nor does my ICQ and other IM clients hook-up like they're all supposed to.

Please help. :(

is the connection set up properly? what I mean is, if you go into your internet options (for ie) click on the connetion tab, does it say "always dial default connection"

Yes, the default dial-up connection is correct.

I don't believe the problem lies in the web browsers or the IM clients. It must be some mess-up relating to the NIC or the modem or the Network Neighborhood protocols ..... ??? ..... The thing is --- I haven't even done anything yet to network my 2 computers together. All I did was putting in the NIC and installed the NIC drivers !!! :(

is it possible that you are having IRQ sharing problems? you can check that in the device manager. if your modem is ISA too, they may not be plaing nice together ;)

I've checked the Device Manager, and the Network Adapter says that there is no conflict !! That is really weird, because the modem could dial through ... no problem there as the connection shows in the system tray. It is a problem somewhere else which prevents my web browsers and IM clients to go out to the internet !?!

Any other ideas ? Please ?

Since yesterday, I have done the following:

1. Removed all modem and network devices from the Device Manager to allow redetection.

2. Removed all network neighborhood clients, adapters, protocols and services.

3. Finally, after #1 and #2 didn't solve anything ..... I have reinstalled Win98SE.

4. Still doesn't work !!!

Please advise. :(

Try this. Go to add/remove programs. click- Windows set-up tab. click- Communications. Uncheck dial-up networking. close and restart. Go to add/remove programs. click-Windows set-up tab, click- Communications. Check dial-up networking. You'll be asked to use your Win98 CD.
Reinstall the dial-up networking from the disk. You may be asked to keep some files,DON'T! Restart and your problem may be solved.
What happens is the files get corrupted and Win98 prompts you to keep those corrupted files. By saying no, your installing all files from the original disk. Good luck!

I did what you said and it didn't ask me to keep any old corrupted files ..... ??? It just went through with the Win98SE CD and prompted for restart. I restarted and dial-in, connection was present but browsing and IM still doesn't work ! :( I am guessing some files related to TCP/IP or DNS or DUN are bad ..... but I don't know.

Please continue helping ..... :(

Just to be clearer than I was, windos will tell you that a file or files that you are coping are older than what you have. same applies just say no.
Did you try taking out the nic and just starting over? Take it out, reboot, remove the networking stuff, reboot and check your connection.
If you got GAS reinstall the nic fresh and try again. You'll aslo be asked to provide the cd-rom again for the networking stuff(I think),anyway you can troubleshoot the problem better item by item. Add and check, and and check.
I had a simular problem and also ran "system file checker", had quite a few bum files.
Hope you get it working!

You could be having a resource conflict that win9x is not able to recognize. Go into device manager and check the IRQ /IO settings that win9x is giving your NIC. Then, close down and pull out the ISA NIC. Check the jumpered IRQ /IO settings on the NIC, and set them to the IRQ /IO that win9x wants to use. (With some ISA NICs they're set by a DOS configuration utility, not jumpers.) Then put back the NIC.

I have already removed the NIC and removed the NIC driver a couple of days ago before I posted to this forum.

I've checked the modem to see if it's bad, and the modem is fine. The fact that it connects to the ISP convinces me that the hardware is OK.

I have also used System File Checker to find out if there are any 'changed' files ..... everything appeared clean ! I do not know what else to try.

The hardware is OK, the ISP connection goes through fine. The problem has to lie within the DUN, DNS or TCP/IP areas. I mean ..... the web browsers and IM clients all can't seem to be able to go out to the internet. Therefore, it can't be an issue with IE or ICQ individually. It has to be something beyond that. :(
