Network card and old computer

I've got a really old computer that I have around for various miscellaneous stuff. Its a 266MHz. It still works. I have upgraded memory on it and Windows 2000 loaded on it. I have a Linksys LNE100TX network card. The computer just acts like it isn't there. It will not recognize it no matter what I do. I've tried a few different slots. The hardware wizard never comes up, and I've tried manually installing with the drivers I downloaded.

Assuming this network card is "too new" for this computer, where do I find an old one that will work with old computers? I've checked eBay, but it looks like new stuff on there. I can't tell if anything is going to work with an old computer.

Thanks for any help.

how sure are you that the card itself is good? try plugging it into another known working pc.

Could be a software problem. I had an old Celeron box that wasn't seeing a NIC at all, no matter what I did. It had XP, and should have worked out of the box.

I had to reinstall, and then everything worked perfectly fine. Don't ask me why, it was probably just a goofed up driver package, or maybe PnP was b0rked. Who knows, who cares. Reinstall FTW :)

Sorry, forgot the mention, the card was working in a different, newer PC. I should also mention that at one time, I had a different wired card in there, and it worked, and for a few years, I had a wireless card, and it worked ok.

I found a different card laying around, a Macronix. I know that this card did NOT work in another old computer I was messing with last year. So I didn't think there was much chance it would work with this computer, but it works.

Thanks for your assistance.

Realizing I have lots of computer parts lying around for someone who really isn't that much of a geek. :)
