The Standard cable that is mainly used today in Networks, is Called CAT5 standard.

The plugs that are used at the ends are called RJ-45.

The plugs at either end can be connected.

PC - Straight-Thru Cable - HUB

Pin 1 TX+ -------------- Pin 1 RX+
Pin 2 TX- -------------- Pin 2 RX-
Pin 3 RX+ ------------- Pin 3 TX+
Pin 6 RX- ------------- Pin 6 TX-


PC - CrossOver Cable - PC

Pin 1 TX+ -------------- Pin 3 RX+
Pin 2 TX- -------------- Pin 6 RX-
Pin 3 RX+ -------------- Pin 1 TX+

Well if you look real close at the colors of the wires you will notice that the order of wires on each end are not the same.

Actually, a 3rd type aside from straigh and crossover is a rollover cable, though it is really only used for consoling into things such as routers. It bascially has the pins reversed so it goes pins 1 to 8, 2 to 7, 3 to 6, and 4 to 5.

There are 3 types of wires you can have ina cable:
Cat5 cat3 and telephone wires 4 twisted pairs in each one but the tightness of the twist of the wires varies. cat 5 being the tightest and best performing of the 3
